The International Sovereign Sanctuary

Safeguards and administers the regular, symbolic, and spiritual chain of the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Mizraim on a worldwide scale, under the guidance of the World Grand Hierophant 99°.

The Sanctuary is not a headquarters; it is a guardianship. It is not a building; it is a flame transmitted, hand to hand, through the centuries.

What is a Sovereign Sanctuary

In the tradition of the Ancient and Primitive Rite, a Sovereign Sanctuary is the jurisdictional summit of an Egyptian Masonic power. It is not a lodge nor a study society: it is the body of the Sublime Patriarch Grand Conservator Princes (96°) who, assembled under the presidency of the Hierophant of their jurisdiction, safeguard the complete transmission of the scale, authorize the opening of subordinate bodies (symbolic lodges, chapters, areopagi, consistories) and watch over the ritual and doctrinal purity of the Rite.

The International Sovereign Sanctuary is, properly, the assembly of the National Sovereign Sanctuaries recognized in regular chain, under the presidency of the World Grand Hierophant 99°. It is at once a symbolic juridical entity and an operative body: juridical, since it issues patents and certificates of regularity; operative, in that it convenes meetings, settles disputes among affiliated obediences, and emits ritual guidance for the chain as a whole.

Functions of the International Sovereign Sanctuary

  • Guardianship of the chain of initiatic transmission from Cagliostro → Marconis → Garibaldi → Yarker → Reuss → Bricaud → Chevillon → Ambelain → Kloppel → current hierophantate.
  • Mutual recognition with the National Sovereign Sanctuaries of affiliated powers.
  • Issuing of patents for the opening of new national jurisdictions or for the elevation of pre-existing bodies.
  • Ritual guarantee: updating and guardianship of the canonical versions of the rituals from 1° to 95° in the official languages of the Rite (French, Italian, German, English, Spanish).
  • Treaties of friendship with related hermetic, gnostic, Martinist, and Rosicrucian obediences.
  • Preservation of archives: patrimonial libraries, inter-obediential correspondence, old manuscripts.

The Chain of the 99°

The 99th Degree — World Grand Hierophant — is the symbolic closure of the scale and the visible guarantee of the chain of transmission. It is not an honorary title nor an office chosen by majority: it is a ritual investiture received in direct line from the preceding Grand Hierophant.

The continental European line — the best documented — passes through Robert Ambelain (1960–1985), Gérard Kloppel (1985–2005) and their recognized successors. Alongside it, there exist legitimate parallel lines: the Anglo-Saxon line (Yarker → Lewis → ...), the Afro-Atlantean line (Reuss → Jean-Maine → Bertiaux → ...), and the Ibero-Italian line (Kloppel → Castelli → Gaudart de Soulages). The International Sovereign Sanctuary recognizes and safeguards all three.

The current World Grand Hierophant 99°, M∴S∴H∴ Mishel Arreola, has received the dignity by convergence of the three lineages, an infrequent event and one which confers upon the International Sanctuary a special degree of historical fullness.

National Sovereign Sanctuaries in Jurisdiction

Under the guidance of the World Grand Hierophant, the International Sovereign Sanctuary recognizes and remains in communion with national jurisdictions across five continents. The Mexican jurisdiction — the Sovereign Sanctuary of Mexico — is the active headquarters of the world seat in this cycle, a fact derived from the convergence of the three lineages in the person of the Grand Hierophant.

The sister obediences recognized in regular chain include, among others, jurisdictions in France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and the Dominican Republic, in their respective lines of legitimate filiation.

Relationship with Universal Masonry

The Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Mizraim operates, in its symbolic degrees (1°–3°), under the universal standards of regular masonry: respect for the Grand Architect of the Universe, presence of the Volume of the Sacred Law, regularity of origin and chain. In its philosophical degrees (4°–95°), it adds its own ritual axis — Egyptian-hermetic-cabalistic — which does not contradict universal Masonic symbolism but enriches it with a specific key to interpretation.

The Sovereign Sanctuary maintains fraternal relations with Grand Lodges, Supreme Councils of the AASR, Grand Chapters of the Royal Arch, and kindred obediences, within a framework of mutual respect for jurisdictions and the plurality of initiatic paths.

The Great Pyramid and the Cornerstone

The guiding image of the Rite’s work is not only the symbolic building common to all of universal masonry. For the Memphis-Mizraim Mason, the Great Pyramid of Giza — with its four faces oriented to the cardinal points, its perfect square base, its geometric ascent to the sky — is the model of the cosmos and, at the same time, the model of the Initiate.

Four faces, four elements, four winds, four cardinal points. A stable base founded on the earth; a unique apex that concentrates and returns the Light. Between the base and the apex, the chambers of the Initiate: the King's Chamber, the Queen's Chamber, the Great Gallery; and beneath all, the unfinished subterranean chamber of descent.

On the apex — in most pyramids lost, and so all the more significant symbolically — rests the cornerstone, the pyramidion of granite or electrum, the stone that receives the first light of dawn and transmits it to the whole structure. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Psalm 118:22). Its form reproduces the entire pyramid: each stone contains in miniature the plan of the whole.

The Egyptian Mason does not build an abstract temple: he erects, within himself, his own Pyramid. And when his work is complete, he himself must become the cornerstone — the one who receives the Light and gives it forth.

Tradition · Initiation · Synthesis

Primordial Tradition

Rooted in the Primordial Tradition, the Sanctuary preserves the doctrinal, ritual, and symbolic purity of the Rite in accordance with the ancient initiatic Mysteries. It is not a group for Egyptological erudition: it is a living transmission.

Initiatic Path

The Sanctuary forms conscious Initiates, committed to inner work, moral rectification, and deep study of sacred symbolism. It does not promise powers: it offers a discipline.

Hermetic Synthesis

The Rite integrates teachings from ancient Egypt, Alexandrian Hermetism, Kabbalah, and spiritual alchemy. A gradual path toward reintegration with the Universal Order.

International Custody

The Sanctuary recognizes, assists, and represents the affiliated National Sovereign Sanctuaries without imposing cultural uniformity: the Rite speaks French in France, Spanish in Mexico, Portuguese in Brazil, Italian in Italy, without loss of identity.

How a Mason approaches the Sanctuary

The Sanctuary does not receive profane candidates directly: entrance to the Rite always begins through a regular Symbolic Lodge within the chain. A Mason already initiated in another regular obedience (AASR, York Rite, Modern French Rite) may request affiliation to the Rite while retaining their degrees; a profane must apply for initiation in the closest symbolic lodge of the affiliated Grand Orient.

For matters of international order — treaties, recognitions, questions about jurisdictions — the Sanctuary receives official correspondence only through the National Sovereign Sanctuaries or, failing that, by the channels documented on the contact page.
